A number of you have clients that are using DOS machines to forward files to your BBS for your processing. Unfortunately, much of this effort is plagued with two problems:
1. Your client has little or no telecommunications skills and
2. Their telcom software is old and badly out of date in terms
of it's file transfer protocol capabilities, which is typically
Checksum XMODEM, or 1977 technology!
There is little you can do about the skill levels of your DOS based clients, but you can help with the telecommunications software.
With the assistance of Eric Hoffmann, Campus Computer, University of Chicago, we have obtained a copy of COMMUNIQUê (file name is "cu-111.sit"), which is considered one of the better DOS terminal emulation programs, including state-of-the-art file transfer capabilities (such as ZMODEM) and other features.
The ideal way to distribute this DOS terminal program would be for you to download "DOS Terminal.sit", which is a DiskCopy v4.2 "Image" format file that will create a DOS 720k format floppy disk. You would then give this floppy disk directly to your client to use on their PC.
Telecommunication via modem is difficult for most people and when it involves a DOS user with ancient software, it becomes a major frustration. However, the TeleFinder BBS supports all current popular terminal interfaces and file transfer protocols which greatly minimizes, and in most cases, completely eliminates problems associated with older methods! Don't waste your time and that of your PC user client, by fooling around with older PC telcom programs, trying to make them work!
